From Making Music In His Bedroom to Selling Out Shows Across The World- EDEN: Live in London
Dublin based Bedroom pop artist Jonathan Ng, also known as EDEN, recently toured The US and Europe following the release of his third Studio Album “ICYMI”. Although EDEN's music is heard across the world today, his journey started with humble beginnings as an independent artist called “The Eden Project “. He would release his music exclusively on Soundcloud and built a tiny community of other producers and independent artists alike.
Eventually, Jonathon would also begin to build a community on youtube, as he started releasing a lot of his music under Koala Kontrol, NoCopyrightSounds and other free to use music libraries. This allowed his music to spread with fans coming in from across the internet space, most notably in 2015, Call of Duty Youtuber “FAZEJev” included the single “Statues” featuring Leah Kelly. The video would garner 3.6M views with the original source of the song on the “Koala Kontrol” youtube channel reaching an incredible 9.6M views as of writing.
The Eden Project would continue to release tracks between 2014 to 2016, Experimenting with sampling and vocal layering gaining more and more notoriety with songs such as “Drugs”, “fumes” “XO” until announcing he would Discontinue The Eden Project with his final release under the Alias “Final Call”, featuring covers of Taylor swift's “Blank Space” and Beyonce's “Crazy in Love”.
As Well as new Singles such as Rock + Roll and Sex (Catching Feelings), The EP blew up gaining a combined total of over 500 million streams as of today. The massive success was also helped by its huge popularity on platforms such as Musically and later Tik Tok.
Jonathon would continue to tour the world and release albums “Vertigo” and “No Future” with his most recent release being “ICYMI”, an abbreviation of “In Case You Missed it”. ICYMI is a refined amalgamation of the sonic scape EDEN has been working with since the dawn of the Eden Project. A beautifully Reflective, multi-layered and experimental art piece that retains the digestive nature of pop. The album sees Jonathon’s signature clean vocals shine in tracks such as “Elsewhere” with incredible layering that feels atmospheric contasted in other songs such as “Modern Warfare” and “Waiting room” where heavy manipulation, reminiscent of the underground hyper pop scene, is used to breathe fresh air into EDENs sound scape.
The instrumental texture throughout the album sees the blending of pulsating sidechained synths with heavy electronic drums kits sat alongside coatings of smooth arpeggiated guitars and soaring pad synths. The tracks are also decorated with beautiful synthetic percussion and vocal samples, most prominently in “PS1” and “Sci-FI”.
All of this is topped by lyrical themes of being emotionally lost through trials and tribulations in an ever turbulent world and coming to terms by finding purpose in one's struggle.
This project is a testament to EDEN’s incredible production in the electronic music genre and his ability to create massive experimental soundscapes alongside his awe inspiring lyrical writing skills that together will make you reminisce over your life and make you find the strength and drive to be comfortable in yourself.
EDEN just wrapped up the ICYMI tour across the US and Europe. A tour that would see him play legendary venues across the world like New York’s Terminal 5, Berlin's Kesselhaus and most notably London's Infamous KOKO, Where we got witness his set live
Within the walls of the legendary theatre, the room filled with Jonathon’s soft vocal melodies amongst the pulsating synths of “Closer 2” followed by “Sci-fi”. This then proceeded into the introspective “Projector” before the theatre came to life with the signature heavy electronic drums of “Sex”, the crowd glistened into communal life proclaiming the hook “I don't know how to forget you” alongside the infamous chorus line “Oh no, I think I’m catching feelings”. At that point, we knew we were in for a good night.
The set then meandered through New releases, already clearly resonating with new and veteran fans alike, as well as the Vertigo single “Crash”, before taking a full detour into the rest of EDEN’s Mega discography. Starting notably with the track “Gravity” from the 2015 release “End Credits”. An emotional performance that encapsulated the theatre with its gigantic drop following the line “You can leave if you really want to”. Succeeded by end credits from the same ep then an incredible three part mashup of fan favourites Tides, XO and Drugs that continued to have the crowd screaming back their heartbreak.
It's an incredibly reflective and emotional masterpiece and a perfect ending to the set, truly encapsulating the overall message of his music. With the crowd singing “I ain't scared of living” as the set fades to a close, it's difficult to fully describe the sense of euphoria felt as the lyrics echoed around the venue.
The set then proceeded until the encore, where EDEN came back to stage with a three part ensemble starting with Reaching 2, a longing track about learning to let go of those dear made all the more clear when you hear the crowd echo the lyrics through the theatre. This was then followed by Wake up before the set closed off with the incredible Rock and Roll. A personally treasured song of mine. All about learning to live with your flaws and striving to be the best version of yourself you can be, it's an incredibly reflective and emotional masterpiece and a perfect ending to the set, truly encapsulating the overall message of his music. With the crowd singing “I ain't scared of living” as the set fades to a close, it's difficult to fully describe the sense of euphoria felt as the lyrics echoed around the venue.
EDEN didn't play a set of live music, he performed an art piece in audio and visual form.
Definitely an artist to keep an eye one with every new release.
